Description

The original rappel rings. SMC Descending Rings are light-weight, one-piece aluminum rings which are used as part of a non-permanent rappel anchor. They are intended to protect webbing or cordage anchors from wear caused by pulling your rope. The low cost means you don’t have to think twice if the situation requires leaving some behind. In addition, Descending Rings are often incorporated creatively in various rescue rigging applications and are used as components in the manufacture of many different products including equipment bags and tents.

SMC Descending Rings are manufactured from a single piece of aircraft quality aluminum to ensure consistent quality, durability, and maximum reliability. Not intended for top roping. Always use caution when rappelling.

APPLICATIONS:

  • Multi-Pitch Climbing
  • Canyoneering
  • Mountaineering / Ice Climbing
  • Mountain Rescue

Are these really safe? Sharp edges

Posted by Ian on Jul 26th 2017

I recently picked one up at an REI and instantly noted there is a sharp edge around the entire ring, noticeable in the pictures as well. This might not cause issues on a pure rappel, but it made me immediately suspect of using one in any case. It seems that with even a small amount of wear that the sharp edge would be exposed to slice and a wear your ropes. SMC Response: Ian, you should never have sharp edges on the descending ring, they are tumbled smooth to assure they do not wear on your rope or cordage. We also 100% inspect every ring before it leaves our factory. We are not however perfect and from time to time something might inadvertently slip through the cracks. If you ever see a D-Ring in a store with questionable edges please bring it to the stores attention immediately. - SMC Customer Service
