Rappel Racks & Accessories

Rappel racks are extremely versatile tools; they are adaptable to a wide variety of ropes, conditions, terrain, etc. They are also the undisputed champion of the long descent (or lower). While there are a variety of other options such as mechanical belay/descent devices, figure 8s, etc., rappel racks have several key benefits that the others lack. Most notably, they allow the user to adjust friction by expanding or contracting the grouping of the bars, doing so results in unsurpassed control of the rate of descent/friction.

Brake bar racks are also excellent at dissipating the heat created by long or rapid descents. This makes them suitable for much longer descents than mechanical devices such as Ellison’s Fantastic Pit in Georgia or El Cap. In addition, thanks to the “in-line” nature of the device, ropes don’t twist like they can do with figure 8s and certain other devices.

Rappel racks may be quickly tied-off which then frees both hands to assist with passing belays, patient care, or other work at height. Rappel Racks are not self-braking devices and do require proper training and practice.

All SMC Rappel Rack frames are stainless steel to provide exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, silky smooth action, and durability. 100% U.S. manufactured; SMC produces the largest selection of racks that are UL Certified to NFPA standards.

J Bar Rack vs. U Bar Rack

J Bar racks, sometimes called Open Racks, allow the user to add or subtract the number of bars during a descent or lower. U Bar racks, don’t offer this feature, but are lighter and more compact and can be equipped with two Tie-Off Bars (AKA hyper-bars) to facilitate quicker tie offs, speeding up changeovers, etc.

Short Frame Racks like the SMC Micro or NFPA U bar work best with heavier loads or thinner ropes. Longer frame racks work well for lighter users or long rappels where the weight of the rope adds additional friction.

Assembly Required! All SMC Racks are sold as kits and require assembly. This allows the user to customize the bar configuration while becoming more familiar with the proper assembly of their rack. Be sure to carefully follow the user instructions. Also be sure to properly tighten the lock nuts before use.
